Ontario Accident Benefits, Explained
A plain-language overview of the SABS for injured patients.
If you have been injured in a motor vehicle collision in Ontario, you are entitled to claim benefits under the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) — regardless of who was at fault. The information below is a general orientation, not legal advice.
Key Benefits Available
- •Medical and rehabilitation benefits — pays for treatment, assessments, and devices
- •Attendant care benefits — pays for in-home care where required
- •Income replacement benefits — pays a portion of lost income for those unable to work
- •Non-earner benefits — paid where an injured person is substantially unable to carry on with normal life
- •Caregiver, housekeeping, and supplementary benefits — available in certain circumstances
The Minor Injury Guideline (MIG)
Most soft-tissue injuries are initially classified under the MIG, which provides up to a fixed amount of treatment funding. If your injuries fall outside the MIG, your treatment provider can submit an OCF-18 treatment plan with supporting clinical justification.
