Physiotherapy

Restoring movement, strength, and function through evidence-informed rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy is the foundation of musculoskeletal rehabilitation at HCMG. Our Registered Physiotherapists, registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario, assess and treat injuries to the spine, joints, muscles, and connective tissues using a combination of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and patient education.

Within our multidisciplinary clinic, physiotherapy is integrated with chiropractic, massage, acupuncture, psychological, and pain-management services where indicated, allowing complex presentations to be managed by a coordinated team rather than fragmented across separate providers.

What Physiotherapy Treats

  • •Whiplash-associated disorder (WAD I, II, III)
  • •Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine injuries
  • •Shoulder injuries including rotator cuff strain, impingement, and post-surgical recovery
  • •Knee, hip, and ankle injuries
  • •Tendinopathies and overuse injuries
  • •Post-fracture and post-operative rehabilitation
  • •Vestibular dysfunction and balance disorders
  • •Headache and cervicogenic dizziness
  • •Functional deconditioning following prolonged inactivity

Our Clinical Approach

The initial physiotherapy assessment includes a structured intake history, review of medical imaging where available, and a hands-on physical examination evaluating range of motion, strength, neurological function, and pain provocation. Findings are documented and used to construct an individualized treatment plan with measurable functional goals.

Treatment may include:

  • •Manual therapy — joint mobilization, soft-tissue release, muscle energy techniques
  • •Therapeutic exercise — progressive strengthening, mobility, motor control, and stabilization training
  • •Modalities — used selectively and based on evidence (interferential current, ultrasound, TENS)
  • •Education — diagnosis explanation, activity modification, ergonomic guidance, return-to-activity progression
  • •Functional retraining — sport-, work-, or driving-specific rehabilitation as the patient progresses

Physiotherapy in Motor Vehicle Collision Recovery

Most patients injured in a motor vehicle collision require physiotherapy as part of their recovery. Common collision-related presentations include whiplash-associated disorder, low back pain, post-traumatic headache, shoulder injury from seatbelt restraint, and knee injury from dashboard impact.

For patients funded under Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule, our physiotherapists complete the necessary OCF documentation, including treatment plan submissions (OCF-18) where care extends beyond the Minor Injury Guideline. Progress reports are issued at intervals required by the funding pathway, and discharge summaries are prepared at the conclusion of care.
