Concussion Rehabilitation

Structured recovery protocols for mild traumatic brain injury.

Concussion — also known as mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) — produces a constellation of physical, cognitive, emotional, and sleep symptoms that can persist for weeks or months without structured rehabilitation.

The program is appropriate for patients with sport-related, work-related, fall-related, and motor vehicle collision-related concussions.

What This Program Treats

  • •Acute concussion — initial assessment, education, and graded return-to-activity
  • •Persistent post-concussive symptoms — symptoms beyond four weeks
  • •Vestibular dysfunction following head injury
  • •Cervicogenic contributors to post-concussive symptoms
  • •Visual and oculomotor dysfunction following concussion
  • •Headache following head injury
  • •Cognitive symptoms — concentration, memory, processing-speed difficulty
  • •Mood and sleep disturbance secondary to concussion

Our Clinical Approach

Initial concussion assessment includes a structured symptom inventory, neurological screen, vestibular and oculomotor testing, cervical spine assessment, and graded exertion testing.

  • •Vestibular rehabilitation — gaze stabilization, balance retraining, habituation exercises
  • •Cervical rehabilitation — manual therapy and exercise targeting cervical contributors
  • •Sub-symptom-threshold aerobic exercise — graded reintroduction of cardiovascular exercise
  • •Cognitive rehabilitation — pacing strategies, attention and memory work
  • •Psychological support — for mood, anxiety, and sleep
  • •Education and pacing — return to school, work, driving, and sport

Concussion Rehabilitation in Motor Vehicle Collision Recovery

Concussion is common in motor vehicle collisions, even in lower-velocity impacts. Many patients have concussive symptoms that are initially overshadowed by musculoskeletal pain and are recognized only later in the recovery process.

For SABS-funded patients, concussion rehabilitation is delivered under appropriate OCF treatment planning.
