Occupational Therapy
Comprehensive functional assessment and rehabilitation focused on daily living, work demands, and independence.
Occupational therapy at HCMG is delivered by Registered Occupational Therapists registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario. Care focuses on how an injury or illness affects everyday function: activities of daily living (ADLs), work-related demands, cognitive and physical limitations, and the ability to live independently.
Occupational therapy assessment is also used where an objective picture of function is required, including functional abilities evaluations and reports prepared for insurers, employers, and legal representatives.
Within our clinic, occupational therapy is coordinated with physiotherapy, chiropractic, psychological, and pain-management services so that functional findings directly inform the rehabilitation plan.
What Occupational Therapy & Assessment Addresses
- •Functional limitations following motor vehicle accident injury
- •Difficulty with activities of daily living — dressing, bathing, meal preparation, household tasks
- •Work-related physical and cognitive demands, including return-to-work planning
- •Cognitive limitations affecting attention, memory, organization, and safety
- •Need for assistive equipment, home modifications, or adaptive strategies
- •Reduced endurance, pacing, and activity tolerance
- •Loss of independence following injury, illness, or prolonged inactivity
- •Functional capacity and functional abilities evaluation requirements
Our Clinical Approach
Occupational therapy begins with a comprehensive assessment of function: a structured interview, standardized outcome measures, observation of functional tasks, and where appropriate a review of the home or workplace environment. Findings are documented and translated into measurable functional goals.
Treatment may include:
- •Activities of daily living retraining — practical, task-based work on self-care and household function
- •Functional and work-demand rehabilitation — graded simulation of job tasks, lifting, and endurance demands
- •Cognitive strategy training — compensation and pacing strategies for attention, memory, and organization
- •Assistive equipment and home modification — recommendations and prescriptions where they support independence
- •Education and self-management — joint protection, energy conservation, and activity pacing
- •Functional abilities evaluation — standardized assessment and reporting of functional capacity
Occupational Therapy & Assessment in Motor Vehicle Accident Recovery
Occupational therapy is central to demonstrating how a collision-related injury affects real-world function. Assessment findings support treatment planning, return-to-work decisions, and funding submissions under Ontario’s Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule.
For SABS-funded patients, our occupational therapists contribute to OCF treatment plans and progress reporting. Where a functional abilities evaluation or medico-legal opinion is requested, reports are prepared to documentation standards suitable for insurer and legal review.
